Acid Westerns at the Factory

Since the rest of Jackson has a closed sign hanging in the window, we decided to liven up these lonely off-season nights with a film series. Factory studios will be turned into a micro-cinema each Wednesday until May. Beer (courtesy of Thai Me Up Restaurant and Brewery), wine, and appetizers will be served. $5 donation.

What's an Acid Western? This will help explain things.

San Diego Streets

We were in San Diego recently and took a day to explore the Street Art exhibition at the Contemporary Art museum. The museum also commissioned some of the world's best known street artists to create public works throughout downtown San Diego. The placement of the Shepard Fairey mural on the side of an Urban Outfitters was weird, but the Barrio Logan works were as real as it gets. Homeless camps everywhere, heroin addicts roaming the streets, and not an Urban Outfitters in sight.

Different Strokes

We just had a killer weekend, and it began with our artist designed mini-golf course entitled Different Strokes(above). We won a Wyoming Arts Council grant for this, and nearly a dozen artists contributed, including Ben Roth, Zach Allen, Rachel Kunkle-Hartz, Benjamin Carlson, Jeff Brown, Travis Walker, Aaron Wallis, Ryan Bailey, Thomas Macker, and the boys at Igneous Skis. Asymbol is the brainchild of Travis Rice and his creative director Mike Parillo. We recently had a chance to swap knowledge with them in our studio and on a visit to theirs. Parillo's work has been featured all over the snow sports industry, and I can see why. See below:

This two man play sounds really good. Alfred Molina plays the tortured painter Mark Rothko. It only runs for a few more days, so if you are in NY be sure to try and check it out. This is the second time Molina has played a painter, his first turn being his depiction of Mexican muralist Diego Rivera in the film Frida.

3. The Pitchfork Music Festival

This festival gets better every year, since the first one held in 2006. The last couple of years have seen icons like Sonic Youth and Public Enemy performing classic albums in their entirety, but this year's eschews that format for a more traditional 3 day lineup. Highlights include Broken Social Scene(pictured above), Raekwon, LCD Soundsystem, and the recently re-united Pavement. And although the $90 3 day passes sold out quick, there are still relatively cheap day passes for $40 available.

Crossover artists

Musicians are always tapping visual artists to provide work for their album covers. Andy Warhol's Velvet Underground Cover or Takashi Murakami's work on Kanye West's Graduation. come to mind.

But Hip hop stars moving into the realm of contemporary visual art is far less common. This week however, there were two interesting stories:

Butterfield at the Center

The Jackson Hole Center for the Art has it's first piece of sculpture on the northern Cache street side. It is by Montana artist Deborah Butterfield, who is known for her gestural sculptures of horses using wood and materials often found near her ranch/studio in Bozeman. Several of her horses graced the Art Association's gallery (JH Artspace) in 2005, and though it was a small show, many locals still talk about it as one of the best exhibitions ever shown in the valley.

Here she explains her philosophy about art and, um, why her horses have no genitals:

Food as Art: The Town House

The Chilled Vegetable Minestrone

Food is an inspiration. On a recent trip this fall to the Town House in Chilhowie, Virginia, we were blown away by the 10 course dinner, a sensory experience like none i've ever had. Inspired by their hikes on the nearby Appalachian Trail, the chefs use things like nitroglycerin to change the textures and presentation of their dishes. And most of these creations DO look like something you might see on the shady forest floor; a flourescent moss, a gelatinous, glistening mushroom, a myriad of colorful wildflowers among black rocks.

A Little Field Trip

We've been on the road for about a month, and oh man is it good to be home. After enjoying a scenic drive through the thick middle section of America, we surfaced on the campus of the University of Tennessee. UT has an outstanding printmaking program. One of the things I like about it is the school's relationship with the letterpress print shop, Yee-Haw Industries. Powered by UT printmaking interns, Yee-Haw cranks out posters, cards, t-shirts, and more, all with a unique southern swagger.

Banksy is everywhere

The British artist known only as Banksy is one of the world's most influential artists, although no one has ever seen his face. Locally, we've seen echoes of his style in the work of Tristan Greszko and other young artists. Internationally, he is an icon, turning up recently in a music video by Radiohead's Thom Yorke (directed by Raymond Salvatore Harmon).

I almost had a seizure watching this, and it isn't one of Yorke's finest songs(these are better), but the video is interesting nonetheless, especially when paused frequently:

Cotton Jones / JH Fart Festival

It's Fall Arts Festival time in Jackson Hole, and that means less families and more art collecting couples and culture starved locals converging on downtown Jackson.

Surprisingly the best cultural event this week doesn't have a thing to do with the FAF. One of my favorite indie bands, Cotton Jones, will be playing here on Monday the 14th at the Bait Shop.

Affectionately called the Fart Festival by many good humored locals, the 2009 FAF runs from September 10-20. For those of us who live here year round, this is our favorite weekend of the year, a few days to enjoy the sunshine (hopefully) with your friends, sample incredible food, and reclaim the downtown from the gapers. And, uh, see some art.

Goonies Bike-In

HEY YOU GUYS!!!

Tomorrow night we are co-hosting a bike-in movie with Fitzgerald's Bicycles at the Center for the Arts Ampitheater. This space has been itchin for use and what better way than chilling out with a few hundred folks in front of Snow King, tossing back a few beers and watching the Goonies.

A short biking film will be screened to open things up, then sit back in your chair(don't forget a blanket too) and enjoy the movie. $3 suggested donation plus $4 beers from the Snake River Brewing Co, Tacos from Pica's, and killer merchandise from the Artlab.

A silent auction will also be held to help raise funds for the lab's studio. Great items including lift tickets to JHMR, Smartwool gear(donated by Rendezvous Event Management), dinner at Teton Thai, Thai Me Up, Cafe Ponza, and Pearl Street Bagels.

Special shout out to Cam and Hughes Production as well as Aaron Wallis and Andy Zimmerman for making this thing happen!

Residency Programs

Artist residency programs, such as Teton Artlab's, play a vital role in the growth of an artist, providing time, space, and often meals and modest stipends to pursue new bodies of work in a nurturing environment.

There are hundreds of quality programs, from one artist in a cabin, to hundreds of artists working in sprawling studio centers. Our Rocky Mountain neighbor and one of the larger residencies, Anderson Ranch, has a great residency program and created this interesting video about it:

Snow-nut

No, it isn't a ski jump. Bland Hoke and the Center of Wonder are creating a large snow sculpture on the side of Snow King Mountain. The temporary installation will last through the summer, protected from heat and UV radiation by snow blankets designed to preserve glaciers from melting. So much for global warming. I stumbled upon the Sitka Center while exploring the Oregon Coast one summer. Perched above the Pacific Ocean, Sitka offers an interdisciplinary residency and workshop program for those interested in studying art and science, and often both at once. This approach is now being applied here in Jackson Hole at the Teton Artlab.

Our residents are encouraged to explore the natural surroundings and use the local resources of organizations like the National Park Service, Teton Science School, Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival, and Jackson Hole Historical Society to enhance their residency experience.

Great news: The Teton Artlab will be moving to the Center for the Arts starting today, into the 1300 sq. ft. Borshell studio on the 3rd floor. Our first priority will be creating an artist in residency program in this studio. This program will provide local artists with affordable, private studio and storage space, as well as numerous exhibition opportunities and career assistance. This is a competitive, merit based opportunity and will be filled on a first come, first served basis. More information will soon be available on our website. The squeaky wheel gets the oil apparently. After taking our story public in December, the local arts community has come to our aid. First, Lyndsay McCandless busted out the defibrillators almost immediately upon hearing we were shutting down, jolting us back to life with her enthusiasm and generous offering of gallery space to show our stuff. We can't thank her enough. Now, there is talk of the Teton Artlab taking over an amazing studio at the Center for the Arts, under the umbrella of the Art Association of Jackson Hole. At under $1 per square foot, this opportunity would provide truly affordable studio space for local artists and much needed visibility in the heart of our local art community. We are looking forward to making an official announcement on this in the next week or so.

Two months after losing key funding, Teton Artlab will close its gallery in downtown Jackson on December 19th. For more info about this, go here. Please Note: We aren't dissolving the Teton Artlab and will post more information about future plans soon.

While the economy continues to crumble, we will take a break and look to resume programming in Summer 2009 at a soon to be disclosed location. Times are tough, but this project has been a bright spot for many and remains dedicated to assisting contemporary artists with their work and careers.

Ok, enough bad news. Wish we had a video of this from our last opening, but you get the idea. We had a great time in that shithole.

Planet Jackson Hole highlighted the Teton Artlab in a cover story about the state of contemporary art in Jackson. Written by Henry Sweets, the piece discusses the trials and tribulations of contemporary artists in JH, and raises questions about the sustainability of the new West movement in our valley. Check it out.

Here at Teton Artlab, we had mixed responses to this article, but ultimately it put some things out there that people have responded to, including the following weeks letter from the editor.

The most important thing is that the paper has started a discussion about the role of contemporary art, both locally and in general, and PJH should be commended for their efforts.

JH Music Festival Day One

We were there for the first annual Jackson Hole Music Festival, and by all accounts it was an incredible experience. With the exception of Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy's request that they turn the stage around, the artists seemed really into the event. (Well maybe not Brian Wilson so much, see below:)

Recently, we accepted an invitation from the Green River Valley Land Trust to photograph several of their land donors, who happen to be owners of some of the most picturesque expanses of the American west. These ranches are home to unique characters, wildlife, and amazing barns. Our project begins at the O Bar Y ranch in Cora, Wyoming. Olafur Eliasson's Waterfalls in NYC have been the most discussed installation since Christo's The Gates. Both required lots of people that don't normally work together to get along (art and government don't play nicely), but the Gates was funded by Christo & Jean-Claude and Waterfalls is funded bythe taxpayers of NYC.

When government supports the arts, great things happen. Waterfalls were possible because of NYC Mayor Bloomberg's passion for contemporary art. Mayor Giuliani once tried to ban an exhibit and cut off the museum's public funding because it was contained poop. He was found guilty of violating the first amendment in a court of law.

That is what is great about the arts, the freedom to look or not look at it, turn the music off if you don't like it, or just walk away. Public officials shouldn't decide what is art, and America is a place where the freedom to express yourself is important. Even if your medium of choice is poo.

ABOVE: The Igneous "World Headquarters"

Jackson Hole is the home base of the Igneous Skis, a wooden ski factory which is also where artist/skier Mike Tierney creates his iconic art. Entering the building on Gregory Lane, it's clear that this isn't your typical "factory". Several murals by Tierney adorn the walls, and the upstairs loft provides Tierney and the occasional visiting artist with space to create art. Definitely one of the most unique locations in Jackson.

I've never seen this sculpture but thanks to this cool invention called the "internet" I am blown away all the same. It is by Anish Kapoor, an Indian born sculptor from England, who has been creating large scale sculptures using a variety of materials since the 1970s. He is having a huge show in Boston this summer and should be one of the best shows this year.

Now that Jackson Hole's has joined the summer music festival circuit, we should look to bring an outdoor sculpture exhibit to this beautiful valley. Dowds, JH Music Festival, Sunshine

Two local artists, Sam and Jenny Dowd, are having two separate, one person exhibitions in town this month. Sam's fantasy cruisers, pods, and "personal jets" are suspended gracefully from the ceiling of Teton Artlab, while his wife Jenny has installed another of her beautiful, mysterious "libraries" at the Artspace Loft Gallery. Both artists are amazing, curious people and it is a great thing for the culture here to experience their unique work.

The news of the first(annual?)JH Music Festival hit a few weeks ago.
and even Spin is excited about the news. Wilco is one of my favorite bands. They have put out some average songs recently, but Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot changed my life, or were at least the soundtrack to big life changes.

Medeski, Martin, and Wood have alot of fans, and have made some amazing records, as do the Black Crowes, even though their recent output hasn't stirred up much critical fame. Beyond those bands, i don't know, but am excited about the number of bands and diversity of the music. Kindof (Can we get a Public Display of Hip Hop in Teton County please?) But after Clipse pulled in a whopping 12 people at the Moose, maybe the time isn't right for that. There insn't alot of "soul" in Jackson Hole if you catch my drift.

Sunshine is finally here in Jackson Hole, after(honestly) 6 months of clouds, snow, and most recently, rain. I feel for the people of Seattle if that is how they roll, because the dull light can be brutal for an artist like me.

Outside Lands Festival

Summer is the time for music festivals. We're closing the gallery from August 22-24, 2008 to see the inaugural San Francisco Outside Lands Festival . This 3 day festival in Golden Gate State Park has an incredible line-up that includes Radiohead, Beck, Wilco, Broken Social Scene, Bon Iver, and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals (the younger sister of artist Charlotte Potter whose glass antlers are hanging in Teton Artlab's gallery this month). Check back in August for photos from the festival and San Francisco.

Robert Rauschenberg was one of the greatest modern American artists. His assemblages and screenprints have changed the way we make art. In honor of his passing, take your favorite piece of taxidermy and sling house paint all over it. Not only do you now have a great piece of art, this is also much cooler than pouring out your favorite malt beverage onto the pavement in honor of your fallen brother.

The experiment begins

One night a couple of artists were talking about starting an art gallery, or maybe a store, or an art studio. Or maybe all three. They had a space in mind, a cool location but in a building that was in disrepair and slated for demolition. It would take some work, but the experience could be rewarding. Or it could be a disaster. The only way to find out is to try.

Teton Artlab opened September 1, 2008. The opening exhibit was titled, "Interaction 1" and featured sculpture by Sam and Jenny Dowd, photography by Lisa Walker and Tristan Greszko, paintings by Travis Walker, sculpture by Ben Roth, prints by Tom Woodhouse, and mixed media art by Sharon Trigg and Craig Spankie. The opening was a great success, although the collaborative interactive work, "Teton Petting Zoo" had to be scrapped because of complications with the "Bungie Eagle" exhibit.
